I ask you, Governor Scott, to stop your state’s execution of Chadwick Banks. Mr. Banks is scheduled to be poisoned by the government of Florida next Thursday, 11/13/14, for the 1992 murders of Cassandra Banks and Melody Cooper.
Firstly, national organizations have documented twenty four death row inmates in Florida that are probably innocent, far more than any other state. Secondly, Florida changed recently to a single drug lethal injection protocol that has never been shown to kill without excruciating pain and suffering. In fact, the victim of a recent execution in Ohio using the same protocol took thirty minutes to die, all the while writhing in apparent agony. Your state’s method of execution defies the Federal constitution’s prohibition of ‘cruel and unusual punishment’. Finally, as you acknowledged in your execution order, Mr. Bank’s crime was of such depraved cruelty as to place it beyond the bounds of acceptable human behavior. Chadwick Banks is clearly mentally ill and in the U.S.A. we do not kill our sick, we get help for them. Governor Scott, you must cancel this execution until you can bring your state into compliance with the laws of humanity and our great nation.
Former Attorney General of the United States Janet Reno, as well as myriads of scholars, can find no evidence that the death penalty deters capital crimes. In fact, the warden of the famous Sing Sing prison believes that the death penalty exacerbates the violence in his facility by setting an example of cold-blooded killing. Recent studies show that the largest increase in capital crimes is in the state of Texas, the state which executes the most people. As for vengeance, that is the Lord’s, not the government’s. Please, Governor Scott, stop this killing of Chadwick Banks. If this execution goes forward, look around this country for the black armbands worn, and the church bells tolled, in protest of this injustice.
Thank you.
