I ask you, Governor Scott, to stop your state’s execution of John Ferguson. Mr. Ferguson is scheduled to be poisoned by the government of Florida next Monday, 08/05/2013, for the 1978 murders of Belinda Worley and Brian Glenfeldt.
Mr. Ferguson has been diagnosed psychotic for the last forty years, since taking four bullets, one to the head, from a police officer’s gun when he was twenty-one years old. He believes he is being executed because he is the Prince of God, and that he will return to earth after his execution to establish a religious regime to rule the world. Your state requires ‘factual awareness’ of the consequences of execution to be judged competent for poisoning. That is a violation of the United States Supreme Court ruling that an offender is competent to be executed only if he or she ‘knows the consequences of execution’ and ‘knows why he or she is being executed.” John Ferguson qualifies under neither of those criteria. It is clear, Governor Scott, that Mr. Ferguson needs treatment, not a poison needle. You must cancel this execution so your state can provide John Ferguson the medical services he is due. We do not kill our insane in the United States of America.
Former Attorney General of the United States Janet Reno, as well as myriads of scholars, can find no evidence that the death penalty deters capital crimes. In fact, the warden of the famous Sing Sing prison believes that the death penalty exacerbates the violence in his facility by setting an example of cold-blooded killing. Recent studies show that the largest increase in capital crimes is in the state of Texas, the state which executes the most people. As for vengeance, that is the Lord’s, not the government’s.
Please, Governor Scott, stop this killing of John Ferguson. If this execution goes forward, look around this country for the black armbands worn, and the church bells tolled, in protest of this injustice.
Thank you.
